What

Using the large Swiss therapy ball, CoreBall is a class that focuses on working the deep, stabilising abdominal muscles which protect and support your back. It is a playful class incorporating not only the Swiss ball but also pairs work, medicine balls, overballs, resistance bands... and the odd kettlebell for those who need to be pushed a good bit further in their fitness.

CoreBall is an easygoing class suitable for a wide range of people, from those with lower back pain seeking to strengthen their deep abdominals in a gentle fashion, to serious runners, cyclists and triathletes who wish to improve core stability to enhance sports performance.

CoreBall will help to:

  • Increase core strength and abdominal tone so as to help protect the back
  • Alleviate back pain
  • Strengthen the upper body in particular
  • Improve posture

When

Courses start in January, April and September and run during term time only for 10 weeks on Mondays from 8.30pm - 9.30pm: this enables me to progress the exercises over the period and it also ensures that I am aware of any medical restrictions (back trouble, joints etc.) that people might have on the course, as everyone fills in a confidential medical screening form beforehand. CoreBall takes place in a lovely new hall set in beautiful countryside just south of Loughborough. Classes are limited to an absolute maximum of 15 so that I can make sure that everyone gets sufficient help and feedback.

How Much

The cost is £59 for the 10 weeks.

Testimonials

Being new to Coreball I had very little idea what it involved. I found the course enjoyable and challenging, and yes, I was the first person to sign up for next term! Jo always ensures there is a good range of exercises for each class and provides the right level of encouragement to challenge everyone. On a personal note, I love the way Jo gives you a number of levels for each exercise enabling you to find the right challenge and see what you are ultimately aiming towards. This enables you to see improvements and results as the weeks progress. I also enjoy the interactive nature of this class, with many of the exercises working in pairs or as a whole group. This is a fun hour and you know your core muscles have worked the next day so that must be good news!

I am an ICT teacher, runner and cyclist who can no longer claim to be young. I have become more and more conscious that I need to think about looking after the rest of my body and not just my legs and lungs. My job means I should really think about posture and core stability. I should not just rely on the accumulation of miles to keep me fit and healthy.
I started the Core Ball Classes not really knowing what to expect. The classes are tailored to the needs/capabilities of each individual. The exercises are differentiated to enable all abilities to fully participate and Jo always has a little something extra to try if a particular exercise is easy.
Although the class is later in the evening I know that I and others really appreciate it. We get a good workout having exercised parts we didn’t know we had and we leave feeling the benefit but calm and rested at the same time. Well done Jo!
Needless to say having finished the first 10 sessions and I’ve signed up for the second set of 10.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. When does the next CoreBall course start?
Q. I suffer from back pain. Is it alright to do CoreBall
A. This course uses core stability techniques and focuses specifically on strengthening your abdominals, as well as on posture. It can, therefore, be particularly beneficial for those suffering from back pain, if done with excellent technique. I would, however, suggest that you seek advice from your GP before enrolling.
Q. I have never enjoyed exercise classes because I find it hard to follow a routine. Will CoreBall be hard to follow?
A. No, this is not a "choreographed" class with a routine. We work through a series of logically organised exercises that strengthen the deep abdominals and I explain each exercise and make sure that everyone is doing the exercise correctly and working at a challenging but manageable level.
Q. I'm a man! Is CoreBall for men too?
Yes! If you want to develop core strength – to alleviate back pain, correct your posture or improve your sports performance – then CoreBall is a very effective way of doing so, and it should become part of your weekly exercise "portfolio".
Q. May I join part-way through?
A. It depends on whether or not my course is full. The best thing is to contact me directly if you would like to try and join a course part-way through: info@zest4lifeuk.com
Q. I have heard that you specialise in pregnancy and post natal fitness. I am neither pre nor post natal! Is this course suitable for me?
A. Yes: any age (from 18 upwards), male, female, fit, unfit etc.
Q. I have had a baby in the last 12 months. Can I join Coreball?
A. Yes, of course you can, and I will look after you as is appropriate depending on how stretched or weakened your abdominals might/might not be. If you have a significant abdominal separation, there are certain exercises which you will not be doing and for which you will be given alternatives. CoreBall can help strengthen and tighten the abdominals post-pregnancy, as long as it is adapted for you.
Q. I am pregnant but cannot make your Thursday evening Fit4birth course. Would it be possible to join CoreBall?
A. No, this class would not really be appropriate for you. Although the Swiss ball is wonderful tool in pregnancy, this class is not designed for pregnancy and it would not be safe for you. How about having a go at Pilates4All (TIM< LINK HERE PLEASE)? I frequently adapt this course for pregnant women.
Q. What should I bring to class?
A. Make sure you've got your gym gear and trainers with you. Bring along some water too.
