This is a high intensity kettlebell course open to both men and women who want to really push their fitness levels and see results but who are short on time. Kettlebells – if you haven’t yet come across them – are unusual looking cast iron weights that resemble a canon ball with a handle, and you swing them. They come in a range of sizes suitable for beginners right the way through to pros. They’ve been around for a very long time but are the current big hit with celebrities who are short on time but who want to keep lean and toned. You’re probably wondering what’s so different and great about kettlebells. Well, here goes:

  • When you exercise with a standard dumbbell, the weight is in your hand and, therefore, within the mass of your body. By contrast, because a kettlebell is on the end of a handle, the weight is outside your body mass and so when you swing it, it exerts forces that have to be controlled through your core, thus working the deep, stabilizing abdominal muscles.
  • In concrete terms this means that kettlebells will give you a brilliant cardio, strength, core and flexibility workout all rolled into one short, intense session, so they’re very economical on time. Great for busy parents, in other words!
  • Ladies! Increasing your strength is a good thing: it gives you muscle definition, it protects you from osteoporosis in later years, an increase in muscle mass helps you burn more calories when you’re at rest and - no – you won’t end up looking like body builders!
  • Regular kettlebell training improves body composition, making you leaner and reducing body fat percentages.

In short, these fitness “weapons” are powerful but they do need to be handled carefully and with excellent technique. I’m a qualified Extreme Kettlebell instructor which is just what’s needed when it comes to incorporating kettlebells safely into your fitness routine!

Courses start in January, April and September and run, during term time only, for 10 weeks: this enables me to work on kettlebell techniques and then progress the exercises over the period (yes, that means work you harder!). Running KettleFit as a course also ensures that I am aware of any medical restrictions that people might have, particularly back trouble and knee, wrist and elbow joint problems, as everyone fills in a confidential medical screening form beforehand. KettleFit takes place in a lovely new hall set in beautiful countryside just south of Loughborough. During the summer term when the evenings are light, classes will be held outdoors in the adjoining field.

The course costs £59.00 and for this you get:

  • Probably the hardest and most effective workout you will have ever done
  • Individual attention and help with kettlebell technique to ensure that you work safely and effectively
  • A monthly newsletter with lots of information, tips and recipes
  • An optional organised evening out each term
  • Extra 15 minute, pre-class technique sessions if you feel that you need more help
  • A wide variety of exercises and equipment that will surprise your body every week!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.When does the next KettlebellFit course start?
Q.What sort of clothes should I wear to KettlebellFit?
A. You are best off wearing loose clothing, such as a tracksuit or gym wear, which allows freedom of movement. Parts of this course are high impact so, ladies, a sports bra that provides good support is essential. For much of the kettlebell work we will be training in bare feet/socks but trainers are needed for the high impact exercises.buggy.
Q.I suffer from back pain. Is it alright to do KettlebellFit?
A. Using kettlebells requires you to engage your deep abdominal muscles which, in turn, are the muscles that help to protect your back. This said, if you suffer from back pain please do contact me before deciding to book onto KettlebellFit, so that I have a clearer idea of the problem and can advise you.
Q. What should I know about kettlebells:
  • Kettlebells bring your heart rate up – fast!
  • Kettlebells are made of cast iron and are very heavy, so don’t drop them on your foot!
  • Kettlebell handles are also made of cast iron and if you grip them too hard your hands will blister!
  • If your kettlebell move has gone wrong, never fight the kettlebell: move out of the way and let go!
  • Protect your back: always brace your abdominals and maintain perfect posture!
Q.I suffer from a heart condition. Is it alright to do KettlebellFit?
A. Kettlebell training can be very intense and works the heart very hard, so please seek advice from your doctor before embarking on kettlebellfit. It is always best to build up your fitness levels gradually rather than plunging in at the deep end.
Q.Your current course is already running. May I join part-way through?
A. It depends on a number of factors, such as whether my course is full, your fitness levels and whether you have any injuries or medical problems that could be aggravated by participating in KettlebellFit. The best thing is to contact me directly if you would like to try and join a course part-way through: info@zest4lifeuk.com
Q. What should I bring to class?
A. Make sure you've got your gym gear and trainers with you. Bring along LOTS of water!
Q. I am not very fit. Will I be able to keep up?
A. It certainly is a tough class but everyone can work at his or her level and I will provide higher and lower options where necessary. Be prepared to work hard, have a laugh and burn LOADS of calories!!
Q. I have been doing your Zest post natal courses. At what stage can I join KettlebellFit?
A. I always suggest waiting at least 9-10 months after having had a baby, before giving this course a go. However, if you have been experiencing back pain or pelvic pain since having your baby then KettlebellFit is NOT for you. Depending on what you are aiming for, I would stick to some of the other courses: Pilates/Bounceback/CoreBall to tighten the abdominal area or BuggyBabies/FitMum/Beacon Bootcamp (post 6 months) to kick start weight loss.
